KOTAGIRI (Land of Kov tribe/ row of mountains)

To break the madness of the city and from our routines, we wanted to go to a place which was not a typical tourist place. Therefore we opted for Kotagiri. Kotagiri is a hilly town situated in the Nilgiris of Tamilnadu state. This place is near Ooty. The distance from Kotagiri to Ooty is approximately 29kms. Since Kotagiri is in Tamil Nadu, the official language is Tamil.  Since it's a tourist place, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and English can be used for communication.

We wanted to stay in the middle of nature for a couple of days hence we opted for Adubettu leisure homes in Kotagiri.

This place is really awesome. Greenery everywhere, calm and serene, the chirping of birds, huge Bisons and green hills. One suggestion from me, you should have very good driving skills to reach the homestay, as it's in the middle of Tea estates and forest. The roads here are curvier, bumpy, Kucha, sharp and steep slopes to reach the place.

 Adubettu leisure homes is in the heart of Nature. The accommodation here is wooden houses on stilts. When we visited, they were three cottages with a small play area where we can spend time playing badminton and cricket. (We had carried our own items for playing with us).

The best thing about this place is the bisons. You will definitely spot bisons in the estate premises. We spotted a number of bisons too during our visit. As they were coming nearer to our cottage from the nearby hills, we went inside our rooms and had a glance from our windows. We are fortunate enough that these beautiful bisons chose to spend time right below our cottages for more than an hour.

This place is very quiet since it is far away from crowded human habitation. This place has absolute silence except few estate workers in the morning hours. Kids might find it difficult to stay at such places since there are no T.V. and cell phone signals. Because of our previous travels, my kiddo was well trained to stay at such places.

Although our main motto of the visit was birding, we had very good sightings of bisons within the estate premises. Every day from 4 pm you can expect routine visitors I mean bisons. we had good birding experience at this place too. I will share the list of birds we spotted here in a later post.

On our way to this stay, we met with a couple of like-minded people who were on their way to do Bear watching. I am hoping one day that I will go bear watching too.

As we are vegetarians and the food here was predominantly non-veg, we opted to have all our meals at Kotagiri town.  Though the town is just 5 km from the estate it took us a lot of time to reach there due to Kucha and bumpy roads. We had our lunch and dinners at Hotel Nahar's  Retreat and Wellness, Kotagiri.

The beautiful serene surroundings, appealing wooden houses, sightings of bisons, wonderful hills all around, relaxing games with friends, scary roads, awesome climate - it was all a feast for eyes and pleasant memories brought home.

The days I cherished here makes me tell - "one more time please…..".

Sewing Diary with Allure

Hello,

It has been a long time since I last blogged. In this time, I learned few things like sewing, baking, quilling and also tested few diet routines. From the past one year, I am stitching my own  dresses. I always had the wish to share my sewing experiences with you all. In the meanwhile, I did a lot of practice to stitch a decent dress.Here is my first attempt at sharing my sewing ideas.

To make a dress more appealing one needs to give proper final touches like piping, making pleats, adding lace to the frock etc. The pain comes in doing piping neatly in a prefessional way. It's not only time consuming but even a slight disturbance while sewing spoils the whole look. There is an old saying that a lazy man will have more ideas on how to do a work easier. That is where you have foots for sewing machines. Now you may be wondering that what is meant by foot?



A foot is a plate which you attach to the sewing machine. Typically it is attached to the rod near the needle, so that the needle comes in the middle of the plate to give stitches to the cloth.A foot is a handy accessory for the people who aim for perfection. Foots play a major role in stitching. Without the foot we cannot stitch anything in a sewing machine  and it's the place where the two threads join together and gives stitching.Allmost all sewing machines comes with Basic foot along with some accessories.




First few months I tried with basic foot and felt that I need a bit more perfection while doing things like bias binding, piping, pleats and making an applique design.There I felt the need for foots. I purchased foots like piping, 1/4th seam, piping and a few more online.The perfection which comes from the specialised foots makes these foots really worth investing.



As foots make a difference in sewing so as pattern making, Pattern making needs a lot of creativity to imagine how the dress should look like. Before I jump directly into pattern making, I would like to share about some  common foots which I use in sewing. Believe me, it's worth having these foots at home. One foot which I admire more is "All purpose foot".  It  is just awesome, I stitched my son's  torn shoe velcro with the help of this foot.

Zig-Zag foot

In my previous post, I had explained about sewing machine foots. Here is my attempt to introduce you to one such foot. Here comes the first one called as All purpose foot.

Here comes the first foot called as All-Purpose foot or zig-zag foot. I prefer to call it as a zig-zag foot. It's called as  All Purpose foot because, you can stitch with this  foot from straight stitch to zig-zag stitch.This foot is used to sew on bulky layers of fabric, to do bulky seams, and it is very useful on stitching textured fabrics like denim, fleece, velvet etc. For beginners do use 1/4 seam foot to do a straight stitch. General settings for All purpose foot depends on the thickness of the material which you are using and the length of the stitch one needed. But for general fabric like cotton I go with stitch length in between 2-3, Pattern selector as A for straight  stitch or C for Zig-Zag stitch in Allure, and Thread tension as 4.

Nannaj (The Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary)

Nannaj is a village in solapur district of Maharastra, India. The land of Nannaj is semi-arid and drought prone.The climate of this region is very hot summer,dry and mild winter.The forest in this reason is thorn forest and dry grass lands.Rainfall to Nannaj is very less.

Nannaj is famous for wildlife sanctuary and especially for Great Indian Bustards(Ardeotis nigriceps). Hence it is called as Great indian Bustard Scantuary,and it is named as Jawaharlal Nehru Bustard Sanctuary in 1979.Great Indian Bustard in Nannaj was first noticed by MR.B.S.Kulkarni in 1972.Its because of Mr.Kulkarni's extensive efforts to save this endangered species, Dr. Salim Ali visited Nannaj and started research on this project. Great Indian Bustards(GIB) are locally called as Maldhok and it is a endangered big bird.The natural habitant of Great Indian Bustard is short grass plains.GIBs prefere open grass lands.

Here is an account of our trip to Nannaj

After a rainy day I visited Nannaj along with few bird enthusiasts to the Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary.Prior permission to visit this place is must.I spoke with few wild-life research students in the guest house premises and found that one group was doing research on Wolves  and another group was doing research on Blackbucks .A girl in the Wolves research team  explained very clearly about the nature of Wolves. My conversation with the group went on and now it was time for us to see Queen of the Grasslands. we took a guide inside the sanctuary as he is familiar with the surroundings .He asked us to enter into a closed mud hut to watch the GIBs, as the Great Indian Bustards are shy in nature.

We found a  herd of Blackbucks, pack of wolves, pack of Dogs ,after much await we found the Queen of the grassland flying towards us and landed away.To my surprise, I found the GIB to be much larger than what I had imagined .We spotted around 8 Great Indian Bustards.They were there for a period of an hour and then flew off to another grass land on the opposite side.We were still there in the hut to see more GIBs. During this time we saw a pack of Dogs hunting Blackbucks. And on the other side of the land we found a herd of wolves in a playful mood.

The time when I visited Nannaj, the forest department had cleared all the big trees over a huge area of land to make the grass land GIB friendly and to grow the Great Indian Bustard's population.

It was a pleasure to the eyes to see Blackbucks playing and jumping on each other along with Great Indian Bustards in the beautiful grass lands.

School children from the local school visited the Sanctuary on the same day and tried spotting birds with one of our friends Spotting scope.

Apart from this we also spotted few garden Lizards(which are food for Great Indian Bustards),Red mites and etc..........

Coming to Accommodation one can stay at Forest department guest house which is preferable or can stay at Solapur hotels.The distance from Solapur to Nannaj is approximately 22 kms and the travel time is approximately 30mins.

Muthathi

Muthathi is a settlement situtated on the banks of the river Kaveri near Malavalli, Karnataka, India.

Muthathi is 100Kms from Bangalore.The route is as follows : Bangalore>kanakapura road>Sathanur>Muthathi Anjaneya Swami temple>Muthathi village.

Muthathi is associated with Hindu diety Lord Hanuman called here as Hanumantharaya and Goddess Sita devi .River Kaveri flows along this area, Muthathi is coverd with dense and lush green forests,and comes under the Kaveri Wildlife Sanctuary.You will be excited to see yourself driving in the middle of the forest.

Muthathi is also a good place for Bird Watching.

Swimming at kaveri river is dangerous,its because of whirlpools and strong currents.

Preferred transportation to this place is one's own vehicle or a taxi,its beacuse the bus service to this place is not very regular.

Here is how our day trip to Muthathi went

We reached Muthathi and visted the temple of Lord Hanuman. The view from temple premises is beautiful,we found a small trace of water falls from temple premises.As the temple is in the middle of the forest and there were plenty of trees around the temple,we saw monkeys and aslo a Rufous treepie.

Then we headed back to Muthathi village. To our surprise the place was  totally flooded. people came there in lorry and cars. And the entrance where we find the river was not so clean it is filled totally with feathers of birds,legs,hands and head of goats, yaaaaaak its totally horrible. We went  a bit further to see a clean spot and after our 15min travel we found totally a good place and it was very clean,calm,and beautiful,and importantly nobody was there.

We settled there with all our packages and enjoyed Swimming, birding .We spotted few water birds, bees, butterflies,Wagtails,Cormorants, big fish ,Asian Paradise flycatchers, Orioles, Leaf birds,Monkeys,White cheeked BulBuls ,and more.

We had packed our food from home and enjoyed having lunch beside the river bed.There are no hotels here.

Apart from cleanliness in the entrance of the village everything is nice here.You will feel yourself totally recharged in the middle of the lush green forest everywhere, a calm sky and serene water all around with the calls of birds makes this place even more beautiful.

This is a wonderful budjet budget notebook from HP . Carrying this is quite easy as it weighs 2.3kgs. Coming to the looks it has a good look

The dimensions of HP Pavilion G6 is 374 x 245 x36.5 mm 

It has 15.6 inch high-definition bright view LED backlit screen . And the maximum screen resolution is 1366 x 768 pixels.The keyboard is very well laid out.

The biggest advantage of this laptop is that you get a quad core processor from AMD for the same price of an Intel i3 processor which is a dual core processor. Another major advantage is that the A6 processor has an AMD ATI Radeon HD 6520G graphic processor which has 1Gb graphics card in which the processor and graphics card share the same physical space  but operate independently. In an Intel processor, the Graphics processor is integrated but is not dedicated like the AMD A6. It improves life of battery and the laptop. Plus,  the AMD A6 has turbo boost which means it runs slowly normally, when it needs to operate more powerfully/faster its turbo boosts upto 2.4 GHz and it is more for any program to run. 

A better web cam would have been preferred as it now has 0.3 mega pixel which is not satisfactory. Given the price and the other features it is a good compromise. Being a place where a lot of tourists visit, there are cultural programs conducted in Thekkady, mainly performing arts like the kathakali.

Google+ is now integrating with one more new Google service and it is Youtube this time.

As you all know Youtube is filled with tons of content from across the world - it may be music,lectures,amazing videos, etc...

As I saw my Google+ today, I found a new feature added to the top right corner in a square box. When you move your pointer, the YouTube logo will slide out asking "What would you like to Play?". You can type the music name or a song it will open in a new tab and give you the related search. A new playlist of video resulting from your search will automatically be populated.

Barbets are arboreal birds .Barbets have a leafy green coloured body with a rough plumage, having moustaches at the base of the beak, large head when compared to the rest of the body. They have a short curved beak, short and strong legs,wings are curved in shape. Sexes are alike among Barbets. Barbets are generally found in lush green areas or the area covered with more trees. I saw Copper Smith Barbet near my home and saw this in different places of Bangalore and more in Nandi hills. One can recognise a barbet's call very easily because of  its unique and loud call,  which is heard as two different calls like Kutrr. Kutroo...Kutrooo and Kut..knt...knt......

Both male and female Barbets take care of their incubation, nesting and feeding of the young ones.They mostly roost in the holes of the trees.At a time they can lay three to four eggs.

In ANASHI I found Crimson Throated Barbets feeding on Fig & Peepal tree near the forest guest house. Most of the barbets I saw were feeding on fruiting trees. One is blessed to hear the cacophony of a group of barbets. 

Copper Smith Barbet is a bit larger than a Sparrow and smaller than Myna, it is grass green in color with crimson breast and forehead.with yellow throat and and green streaked yellowish underparts.

Crimson Throated Barbet is a bit larger than a Sparrow and smaller than Myna, it is  grass green in color with crimson fore crown, forehead, chin, throat and upper breast, crimson patch below eye and on cheek, the latter streaked blackish.

White Cheeked Barbet  is grass green in color with white cheek stripe and with white naked eye patch black,breast  streaked with brown and with white chin and throat and is about the size of a Myna. 

Blue Throated Barbet is about the size of a  Myna and it is  grass green in color with crimson crown and fore head,sides of head, chin, throat and fore neck are pale blue in color and it has a transverse black band above the eye, crimson spot on the each side of the neck and at the base of the bill.

Brown Headed Barbet is about the size of a Myna and  it is grass green in color with head, neck,and breast brown streaked with white. Very clear orange bare patch around eye extended to the bill.

Linesated Barbet is about the size of a Myna and it is similar to Large Green Barbet and it has a small yellow eye patch and doesn't extend to nape and it is broadly streaked.

Great Barbet is about the size of a Myna and it is brightly coloured yellow bill with bristles at base  and it has maroon crown with violet blue , black head and bright scarlet patch under tail.

2. What's so special about him?

He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra



3. So what?

This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.



4. Ok,...?

This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.



5. Really, what is he fighting for?

He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.



6. How that can be possible?

He is advocating for a Bil, The Jan Lokpal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.



8. It's an entirely new thing right..?

In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).



7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?

The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.

Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the JAN LOKPAL BILL. 50% goverment participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.



8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?

A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.



9. Is he alone? Whoelse is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?

Baba Ramdev, Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.

Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

At least we can spread the message. How?

At least we can support Anna Hazare and the cause for uprooting corruption from India.

At least we can hope that his Hunger Strike does not go in vain.

At least we can pray for his good health.

Interdependence

Interdependence is an art of sharing a common set of principles with other without any conditional love. Its a beautiful art of living with each other. They should be responsible to  each other in an emotional way,and in all aspects, they should respect each others views,responsibilities, more importantly provide moral support.

Interdependent family members respect each others opinion, make moves so that it wont hurt any person in the family. I feel every human being is interdependent on others in a society. An Independent person is who certainly wont bother about others in a family, thinks of his own comfort,luxury,wont welcome a new person in his zone thinking that his/her independence will go,but an interdependent person welcomes any one with a smile.

As Gandhiji said

"Interdependence is and ought to be as much the ideal of man as self-sufficiency. Man is a social being. Without interrelation with society he cannot realize his oneness with the universe or suppress his egotism. His social interdependence enables him to test his faith and to prove himself on the touchstone of reality"

Interdependence is all about making and being in a beautiful world called relationship. You may think why am I suddenly talking about it, because I felt that every human being is in a hurry to achieve a great thing called independence which I am hearing almost every day in my surroundings that I am independent and no need to care for others, the fact is that we humans are never independent but we are interdependent with each other,

I think you need to learn to deal with ones own attitude, ego, selfishness and I am not asking you to sacrifice ones own personality but to see the things clearly,and more important form your allies, I mean make yourself friendly with all.

A tough task

During my afternoon walk, my lil one and myself found a beautiful squirrel coming down in a playful way. Both didn't know that it will be a prey for a grey one. In a glimpse of second we both saw it in the mouth of a predator, lil one don't know that the squirrel is no more, asking me again and again where is it amma? where is it? I tried several times to save the cute one.Unfortunately the dirty dog took it and went away. I couldn't control my venus instincts and came home by answering lil one's same question ."that kulilu is no more, bad ferosious jujja hupp madidey'.

Answering things to the kids is bit tough and when it comes to the things like this it is even hard.

Kolhapur is famous for the Mahalakshmi temple, Kolhapuri chappals and its traditional jewellery like nuth and bugdi. The Kolhapura Mahalakshmi temple is one of the Astadala peethas.

The Mahalakshmi temple is unique due to the fact that one can get darshana of the Devi even from outside without getting in the crowd, and the visibility is also very clear. There are six entrances and exits to the temple.  One can get the things to offer to the goddess inside and as well as outside the temple. We can find people buying sarees, flowers, bangles, beetelnuts and leaves,Kumkum,coconut and all the stuff needed to offer to the goddess in one place.

We can find Sakshi Ganesha at the entrance of the temple, there is a
belief that he counts all the visitors to the temple.


The time I visited the temple mangalaharati was going on and the custom is for all women folk should go before Garbha gudi and sit before goddess and sing the prayer songs once the aarathi is done.Everybody should clap then they will sprinkle the water on all the devotes, after that we can offer pooja.


After finishing the darshana of the goddess we came outside to buy the prasada. As a lady I am tempted to try new jewellery from all the places and I ended up purchasing a Bhugadi, nuth, a pearl necklace and antique jewellery. I also bought a pair of Kolhapuri chappels, keychains (for my son) and the most cute one was a keychain of kolhapur chappels.

Auto rickshaw drivers are much more sincere and honest in Kolhapur unlike Bengaluru(Bangalore).

My one year and seven month old son cooperated a lot during travel, He enjoyed his train journey,the hotel premises, auto, everything we travelled.He saw a Lion statue on the garuda gamba and started telling
us again and again about it and mimicing it. Even in sleep he was recalling the statue of the lion.

As soon as he entered the train he wanted to sit on the upper berth and slide from there, it became difficult for both of us to handle him. During the return train journey we saw a couple of Peacocks and he started to show both of us the way they were flying,

Anything new he finds he started imitating it.

 Asian paradise flycatcher is a very cute and beautiful bird. Its tail looks like the dress of a bride. I found this lifer in Nandi hills, Bengaluru. Asian paradise flycatcher's scientific name is  Terpsiphone paradise , found in India and Asia. Paradise flycatcher is a medium sized bird with glossy black head and with a black crown and crest.

Too cute to this Asian paradise flycatcher. Male Asian paradise flycatcher changes color in first few plumage years. There is a small difference between female and male adult Asian paradise flycatcher. The color of male flycatcher changes to white when it becomes adult and female remains brown in color.

I found this beautiful flycatcher in Nandi betta and Anashi forest and in Singhad,Pune. It sits on the low branches of the trees and shrubs, and mainly fed on the insects. This is resident of southern India and the breeding period is winter in these places, and the nest of this cute paradise flycatcher looks like a cup.
